  • Sea Shepherd Conservation Society "End of the world Coming? Yes, but not how its reported." -- My personal view and rant. - Omar Todd - CIO of Sea Shepherd. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9730618/Mayan-apocalypse-panic-spreads-as-December-21-nears.html The irony of of this is while all these people panic for a fictional ending, the reality is the end is coming, for our species but it is MAN MADE not an "act of god". It reminds me of J. Robert Oppenheimer's famous quote originally from Bhagavad Gita, "Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.". Why do people all panic for a perceived end of the world based on rumours, fiction and pure faith yet the hard evidence revealed at the Doha Climate Change Conference where after 12 days the best results that were obtained were a continuation of an outdated agreement that only encompasses a small percentage of the world top polluters (the US being the largest polluter never signed up to the original Kyoto accord) is barely a ripple in the world's media?    Despite the urgent reports of scientists and the fact even the average person on the street acknowledges at least the perception of more uncertain weather patterns and seasons, the climate can is again kicked down the road and our borrowed time gets less and less.  A report in the UK revealed just the other day that the young generation are more concerned about "jobs" where 10 years ago climate was on top of the list of concerns. This is not a good sign. I think the financial crisis is a excellent "trailer" on how we act as a species with unpleasant decisions. Based on the fiscal cliff we have all been hanging off the past 6 years, not alot has changed. The system is broken, we patch it up, have more and more conferences, but really it's based on a flawed outdated system that really cannot be saved. (I'll reserve my rant on the evil that is the federal reserve for another time).  Will the climate problem be delt with in the same way? While our cities sink, the weather becomes more erratic,   will we continue to spurt out debates and mini solutions while never coming to a consensus for a global solution? Yes definitely, this is how I believe it will play out.  Apathy as Paul Watson has often said is our primary problem. We are a species that lives day by day, on borrowed time and only with a consensus of will power and some heavy science will we see through the oncoming crisis thundering towards us. In some ways its the most important time of our brief history. I would argue with our technical advances we could almost buy ourselves out of the predicament. But only just barely and only if we do it NOW. Of course, no one wants to talk about these politically incorrect issues, population control, fair global resource management or future crisis planning. (Incidentally I find many parallels with the industry I am in, the Cyber Security world where usually our pleas of planning ahead are often ignored until it's too late, almost always!).  So we all do our bit and for me it's Sea Shepherd, but in the back of my mind these thoughts linger. Probably why I've not even considered having kids. When will our species realize that how we treat our planet is interconnected to our well being? In my view not until it's too late, not until it's too late. RIP Homo Sapiens, your time is nigh...and we can only hope for a quick painless apocalypse on the 21 December,  because the current palliative care ward which our species resides in will eventually be the coffin we bury ourselves in unless we make urgent changes and fast.
