Details

  • About Us: Much like the bat symbol in the sky alerts Batman he’s needed for a crisis, the chasing arrows symbol is our modern day beacon calling all Recycling Heroes into action. We are introducing a new Recycling Heroes “community” where professionals and consumers alike have a platform on which to share stories about their recycling successes outside the home. The site is NOT about curbside recycling. Although good public recycling correlates with better at-home recycling rates, instead we focus on the 1,000’s of places where there is no place to deposit your recyclables. We are creating a community that celebrates true Recycling Heroes who create infrastructure for on-the-go recycling in public spaces. We invite you to add your story and encourage other recyclers to commit to 3 objectives. To celebrate Recycling Heroes who are instrumental in initiating on-the-go recycling programs. To document their success in diverting high volumes of waste often generated in public venues. To anchor sustainable on-the-go recycling in public spaces across the American landscape Recycling Heroes Facebook and Website are where these hero stories are collected and shared. Visit our Recycling Heroes Facebook page to add your own heroic accomplishments or to share the feats of other heroes in your community. (Be sure to “like” us while you are there!) Visit our Recycling Heroes Website. Longer stories can be sent with articles, pictures and videos directly to our Editor. Category Tags on the website will be added to create a Directory of Resources by type of venue (IE: Schools). Calling all Super Heroes Over consumption, cheap landfills, 3rd world “Recycling” of electronics in dangerous environments and global warming are just the tip of the Recycling Iceburg. The Recycling Heroes of today and tomorrow have challenges, quandaries, obstacles, and predicaments not previously faced by their predecessors. Who will respond to the chasing arrows spotlighted in the sky? The answer is reflected in your mirror. We all have a Recycling Hero within us who needs to rise to the occasion and tackle these conflicts. Speaking at the RE: Psychology “Making Recycling Second Nature” Symposium Marilyn Cruz-Aponte, Assistant to the Director of Public Works, Hartford, CT, said that we are dinosaurs, and many of us are already extinct. This site is dedicated to encouraging and inspiring people to become Recycling Heroes like you!

  • Mike Allen he spirit of giving is at its peak during the winter holiday season. Unfortunately, so is our environmental impact. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve, we generate 25 percent more landfill waste than during the rest of the year, and buy enough greeting cards to fill a football stadium 10 stories high!* There are simple ways to "green up" your holidays that may even save you money and spark new gift ideas. Keep these considerations in mind: Life span:  Look for gifts that are long-lasting and durable, or that can be passed onto someone else when your recipient has finished using it. For the person who already has everything, consider giving a personalized gift (see suggestions below). Materials:  Try to purchase products made from organic or recycled materials, in minimal, recyclable packaging. If you're buying electronic or household items, look for the most energy-efficient models. You can ask store clerks for this information or research products online. BYOB:  Bring your own tote bag to carry gifts, avoiding the waste of paper and plastic bags. Plan ahead:  Consolidate your shopping trips to save gas. Shop locally, or skip driving altogether by shopping online. Creative gift wrapping:  If each American household wrapped three gifts in reused materials, enough paper would be saved to cover 45,000 football fields.* Reuse old wrapping paper, gift bags or boxes, and Sunday comics, or make cloth bags in which to present your gifts. Cards:  Purchase cards made from recycled paper, or cut the picture side off of old cards and send them as postcards. Better yet, skip paper altogether and wish a happy holiday to loved ones via the Internet ("e-cards"), telephone, or in person. Stumped for gift ideas? Here are just a few specific suggestions: Food:  Make cookies, breads, or jams and present them in reusable tins and jars, or give a pre-made, frozen gourmet dinner right in the baking dish. Gift certificates:  Offer to do yard work, shovel snow, babysit, walk the dog, or cook dinner
