Can we really continue on the path we are walking? Limited and renewable resources are being consumed without any regard for the future. Economies are stepping on each other to get ahead and stepping on anything in their way, human rights and the environment included. I don’t believe this is a future that can continue and I think I know the solution.
Sustainability is a word that is tossed about a lot, but it’s where our true future must lay. Essentially, Sustainability means living in a way today that doesn’t compromise the needs of the future. There are many people and businesses out there that are starting to catch on to sustainability and sustainable growth. The secret to sustainability is the Triple Bottom Line.
The ‘triple bottom line’ is an economic term similar to the tradition ‘bottom line’ which speaks of the fact that when it comes down to it, we all need to make money. The triple bottom line essentially means that when it boils down, we need to do more then just make money, we need to protect the environment and people as well. For example, buying 100% Canadian products means you are supporting our labour laws and labour standards, our environmental policies and standards and our economy. An added bonus to buying 100% Canadian is that by supporting our economy all the way up the line, you are protecting our jobs for well into the future. This is what a sustainable economy looks like, and this is the only future possible that maintains our society, economy and the environment. If an activity is not good for all three lines (environmentally, socially and economically) then it is not an activity to be supported.
Many companies are switching over, but they need more support from the consumers. Buying local is a great start towards the long path of sustainable economies. A great example of a company focused on the triple bottom line is Wood Wise Furniture and Cabinetry. Visit them on 182 Woolwich St or the website (www.woodwisefurniture.com) to find out more!
